I picked it up on Kindle and presently about 25% of the way through it and am pleasantly surprised by it! It's a much more dense piece of work than some of their recent Pendergasts and feels closer to Brimstone in its tone and scope.
I've liked the general plot of the Helen Trilogy, but the second book felt much more like a screenplay sketch of a full novel - lots of fast story shots, very little 'meat' to chew over. This one started off in a way that felt like that, then crashed into a wall with a Ron Burgundy style "Boy, *that* escalated quickly!" moment and has been a much more satisfying read.
And honestly, I like my characters tortured and brooding. I have brooding here in *spades*.
